This is a very basic task that I need to perform, but I don't know how to do it.
Has someone successfully printed a pdf on Alpine?
What programs are needed and what are the steps?
Thanks a lot.

What do you mean by print PDF? As in a PDF file and printing with a physical printer over USB or network. Or as in "printing" a web-page to a PDF?

Install 'cups-client' package, 'hplip' (if you have a HP printer)
or 'foomatic-db-engine' and/or 'guttenprint-cups' (otherwise). All 3
packages are available only in testing repo. That's the main problem here.

Then setup CUPS via web-interface on port 631 and use lp command to print
your document: https://www.cups.org/documentation.php/options.html

Also check this page at ArchWiki:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS

It's not a complete guide, but a good starting point.

I can't print anymore because the "hplip" package was moved to unmaintained.
Can someone fix this?
Thanks!

That's sad, I'll wait. I know 3.5 will be lots of work and everyone's busy.
Hope you remember about hplip later then :)
Thanks.

Thanks Timo!
Some dev with HP printer should take maintainership.
I hope it ends well.
I'm happy hplip is back :)

There's a bug about it too:
http://bugs.alpinelinux.org/issues/6330

I looked at it for few minutes, but it seemed non-trivial. The old
version of hplip no longer compiles, nor did the latest version. We'll
be happy to apply any patches sent.

But most devs are currently busy doing release engineering for 3.5 and
first rcs are hopefully in few (working) days time out. So it might be
a while before we got down to this...

The issue was error in make files rules. -j1 solved it. Pushed the new
version back to testing. I hope someone could take over the
maintainership.

/Timo
