it seems as if /var/log/messages is not processed via logrotate !!!

Any clues ???

If you are using the built-in busybox based syslogd, then it rotates the 
logs on its own.  So you don't use logrotate in that case (confused me 
at first too)

For the sysklogd apk, the included logrotate works AFAICT.
