I've tried inst= alling the lts kernel. When I boot the domU from this
kernel I get a kernel panic. Do I have to add additional configuration
parameters?

I have to added that this p= roblem are happened to me also. i solved by modify the root disk parameter.= . =C2=A0but i'm talkin about a real machine, in the grub i specify the = rootfs .. sda1
=C2=A0

In the grub "menu.lst" I just copied the entry of the virtual ker= nel and
adopted it for the lts.

As Drew stated

the purpose of this all is to put the access point with hostapd in a
confined area on the server, since it acts as a gateway, too. Same for
dns, dhcp etc. But these service don't have special requirements.
