Thanks Vince, that's exactly what I did. An old 1GB stick & 2 different
USB Optical
drives both resulted in the same situation i.e. mounting boot media failure!

OK, so I booted Deb Linux, re-downloaded the image, checked checksums &
burnt to
a new 'modern' 16GB thumb drive using DD
Not only was it loads faster burning the image but it booted both my
laptop and
desktop no problems - so, all good!
My conclusion: the old 1GB thumb drive was way too slow and unable to create
suitable drive / mount point in time.
